The Jaguar and Jazzmaster vibrato units have long been problematic for various reasons. There are many improved after market versions available but these are basically a stainless steel copy of the original, constructed in a very similar way.
There are obvious constraints when designing a new vibrato because most players want to retain a similar look to the Fender version and do not want to make major modifications to the guitar, a drop in replacement is preferable.
The Ultimate Vibrato designed by Staytrem does retain the original Fender look and will drop straight in, but underneath it is very different.
The Staytrem designed vibrato unit has a tremlock which is essential for ease of tuning and set up, but this is not like the Fender version, it is very easy to lock and unlock with a twist of the Allen key supplied with the unit.
When the lock is released there is no guessing how much tension to apply to the adjusting spring, there is an indicator to show when the floating plate is back to the ‘tuned’ position.
The floating plate is positively pivoted on smooth bearings.
The tension spring collar and retaining screw on the original unit can rotate and loosen over time while playing. This causes the spring to lose tension and put the guitar out of tune.
Ours has features which prevents this from happening. The adjusting screw is held tight to stop it rotating and the spring collar is also held in place to prevent rotation. Where the spring meets the floating plate there are self lubricating bearings to ensure a smooth action.
Finally the Ultimate Vibrato is fitted with a Staytrem type arm and collet.
